"This is the real secret of life--to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play."
--Alan Watts
I wonder if the question "Do We Live to Play or Play to Live?" makes any sense.
As if we really have a choice.
If I say" No. I live to play". Does it matter what I say.
And if I say: "But for me it is different I play to live". Does it really matter what I say.
I think Alan W. wrote something along the lines: Life is a game with the first rule that it is not a game.
Life is a game with a certain deadly end.
The deadly end actually makes it kind of fun. because what could you ever do to make the end really change? Nothing.
Being aware that there is no choice suddenly gives you freedom of choice. Strange mmh. Being aware that there is nothing to win makes you win ALL. very strange indeed.
However the relative truth is created according to the situation the individual feels it is in. You can believe that it is a game or it is "not a game". In relative truth both situations can be right.
In TRUTH or REALITY the question does not make sense and is irrelevant.
The life we lead conditions us:
to become, to achieve, to reach,:
more money, more power, more happiness, more sprituality.
my organism reacted by dropping out of that cycle.
I feel that something is going wrong with the working life in our so called western "capitalistic" societies.
I feel that there will be a reaction from people.
I am an example. And many, many people I know who are fed up with their working life.
I read a statistic among german employees that showed that:
"20% of respondents had the feeling that they are stuck but had quit their job emotionally"
" another 65-70% of respondents were unhappy and sure that they would be happier in a different job and would not pass an opportunity to change or were acftively looking for a new job"
meaning 85-90% of employees are unhappy in their current jobs.
I believe there is something going wrong here, fundamentally wrong.
Another point--
At the risk of being obvious, living is what it is all about.
The only questions are, does living require some "one (I)" to live it, how to go about the living process with integrity and a sense of bliss that is the birthright of human life.
Anyone who does not recognize that our culture is on the wrong path and thinks that by "playing" along with the aims and games that make up our society needs to re-evaluate.
In general less is better than more, emmpty yourself, forget about words and ideas and follow the ancient path.
The sage does less and less until nothing is done. When things are doing themselves nothing is left undone. Let the world do itself.
Do We Live "to" Play or Play "to" Live?
I think that the key word in the above conundrum is "to." As long as we do something in order "to" achieve something else, we're in trouble, for we've lost the satisfaction of doing it for its own sake. And when we've lost that, we've lost everything. We're like Faust, who sold his soul to Mephistopheles because he was dissatisfied with where he was in the present.
